With choreography by Jules Perrot and music from Cesare Pugni (1802-1870), the ballet was first performed in March of 1844 by the Ballet of her Majesty’s Theatre. The ballet is commonly performed in its entirety to this day in Russia and Eastern Europe. This edition, orchestrated by William McDermott, is of the movement Pas de Deux, which is a favorite performance piece in ballet competitions world-wide.
