| Program Notes | The emotional response to Sichuan's Great Earthquake in May 2008 encouraged the first draft of the Symphonic Poem Sorrowful Tiantai. The draft finished in under a month, but the complete revision and orchestration was completed by October of the same year. The scoring is for a triple-winded orchestra, and the chorus could be as large as 200¬300 performers. The work combines the traditional symphony, the piano concerto, and the symphonic poem into one union, with the solo piano, singers and orchestra each playing an important role. Divided into two parts and seven sections, the composition lasts about fifty to fifty-five minutes. |
