| Program Notes | ARIOSO is one of several works in which I've rekindled memories of my years as a jazz pianist. Threads of Dave Brubeck, Bill Evans, and Erroll Garner weave throughout this piece. The typical jazz hi-hat rhythm permeates much of the early part of the work, interrupted by arpeggiated sonorities which accompany a section which is both deeply romantic and mysterious (lontano). The hi-hat idea returns, and gradually evolves into lush Garner chord tremolos. A short section leads to a return of all of the previous materials, simultaneously. All memories stem from the same source. |
