| Program Notes | The structure of the Prelude for String Quartet is mosaic, rather than developmental. Small fragments of melodies and rhythm keep recurring, but the final design is not revealed until the concluding gesture in the first violin, resolving into an optimistic chordal statement. While this structure is not a traditional musical design, it is derived from the way in which we live. By this I mean, that events in our lives do not occur in nicely ordered patterns, but in less structured, somewhat random fashion. Inevitably, we reach points in our lives when order and reason prevail: it makes sense. This is an intesely personal work, about a little girl who was lost and later found. It seemed appropriate to mold the experience as closely as possible to the real-life people and events which guided its creation. --Edward Applebaum |
