Title NamePomp and Circumstance Marches, Op. 39: No. 1 in D (Schmid)
Marketing Copy
Edward Elgar's (1857-1934) POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE MARCHES consist of five marches for orchestra all published under Op. 39. Named after a phrase found in Shakespeare's OTHELLO, they were meant to showcase that the splendidness of military pageantry ("Pomp") has little relation to the drabness and terror of actual warfare ("Circumstance"). MARCH No. 1 in D is certainly the most well-known of the five, with the Trio section, which includes the melody known as LAND OF HOPE AND GLORY, used in almost all graduation ceremonies in Canada, the Philippines, and the United States. It was premiered in Liverpool, along with No. 2, on October 19, 1901, by the Liverpool Orchestra Society, with the dedicatee Alfred E. Rodewald conducting. The original orchestration is substantial, so Adolf Schmid re-orchestrated the work in 1902 for theater orchestra, although a theater orchestra version of this work more resembles the standard Romantic era orchestra.
