| Program Notes | This piece was composed in 1978 for the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC and revised in 1994. The work is divided into three movements, in which the violin and piano rarely cooperate or agree with each other. Instead, each instrument moves independently of the other. George Walker explains: I wrote a piece that is not easily understood or comprehended on first hearing. It is intense and at times somewhat violent. Contrasts are sharply defined. The first of its three movements utilizes intervals from the initial solo statement of the violin as unifying elements. The arching phrase following the introduction recurs at the end of the movement. The second movement has the perpetual motion style of a toccata with fluctuating pulsations and accents in the violin part and irregular interjections in the piano. The third movement sustains the duality of material given to the two instruments. The movement ends with a segment of the spiritual, 'Let us Break Bread Together.' This is stated fragmentarily by the violin in combination with massive chords in the piano material used earlier in the movement. |
