Program NotesSonata for Violin and Piano (1999, rev. 2001) was commissioned by and is dedicated to violinist Karen Bolshevian Ringwold. It was written for the 2000 Contemporary Music Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria. The work is in two contrasting movements. The principal musical material for the work is the melodic and harmonic material presented in the first movement.

The two movements are as different as possible. The first movement has the slow, lonely, and open feeling of a mountain ballad. The second movement has the fire, excitement, and bustle of a thriving urban center.

The first movement, Prelude: Mountain Song, is inspired by the folk songs of the Appalachian mountains. While there are no direct quotes, the overall tone is an allusion to the singing that Ms. Ringwold remembers from growing up in this beautiful part of the United States.

The second movement, Postlude, uses extensive transformations techniques to change the material of the first movement into new thematic material. Bitonality and overlapping triadic harmonies abound. --Carson Cooman
