Program NotesThe Particle Zoo is the result of collaboration, rare in my output. The Pittburgh Dance Council commissioned the Pilobolus Dance Theater and me to create a new dance/musical work. I trekked several times from Pittsburgh to rural Connecticut in order to work closely with the choreographers and dancers. At times, I improvised music to the movements of the dancers as they were being shaped. Finally, when the choreography was done, I was handed a video tape to which I composed the actual music, just like scoreing a film. (But what film has 20 minutes of continuous music?)

The nature of the movement seemed to demand music even more rooted in the vernacular than my usual style. This in turn led to the inclusion of synthesizers and electric bass along with the acoustic instruments.

The Particle Zoo was premiered on January 19, 1990, at the Benedum Center in Pittsburgh by the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble and Pilobolus. After the initial run of performances, the music and the dance have gone their separate ways. Therefore, with only slight modifications, the score has become a purely concert piece. The first concert performance was January 21, 1991, at Levy Hall of Rodef Shalom.

The Pittsburgh Dance Council commissioned the work with support from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, The Pew Charitable Trusts, and The Pittsburgh Foundation; the score is dedicated to Carolelinda Dickey, executive director of the Pittsburgh Dance Council.

ReviewPREMIERE OF PILOBOLUS "ZOO" A COLLABORATION OF GENIUS
"Nothing less than exhilaration can result when ingenious creative forces meet and put their heads together. The collaboration between the Pilobolus Dance Theatre and Pittsburgh composer David Stock is one example of such joy. Commissioned by the Pittsburgh Dance Council . . . the work turns out to be a kinetic romp, with Pilobolus filling the stage with physical whimsy and Stock providing a score that energizes every moment. . . . Much of the aroma in this Zoo stems from Stock's score, a compendium of snazzy musical devices catapulted by rhythmic ebullience and bright, bluesy colors. Stock's music, played with mounds of character by his own Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, joins seamlessly with Pilobolus' inventiveness. It is a pleasurable collaboration."<BR>-- Donald Rosenberg, The Pittsburgh Press
