Review"...Hailstork uses the stately old hymn tune's long-ago-and-far-away qualities for contrast with his own more pointed, turbulent musical language. The work seesaws between a bittersweet calm--best expressed in a moving section of humming voices over strings, celesta and solo French horn--and the anguished tartness of a wind orchestration jangling to the reed and brass tones heard in modern "straight-ahead" jazz. Past and present mingle in the uneasy atmosphere of the street." -- Clark Bustard, Richmond Times-Dispatch

"...Hailstork called for a rich variety of orchestral color and employed a number of percussion instruments...Toward the end, orchestra members hummed the spiritual 'My Lord, What a Morning' and instruments took up the tune, bringing the work to a peaceful and moving close."
--Liz Vantrease, Richmond News Leader
