| Program Notes | I wrote this piece for Greg Watkins, and extraordinary bassist at Peabody Conservatory. The second movement was inspired by another bassist, Robert Oppelt of the National Symphony. They have both performed it. It was a wonderful challenge to find ways to make a naturally soft instrument like this stand out from a string ensemble. I chose to write much of this using the instrument+s lower register. After all it IS a bass, and those are the sonorities that I love about the instrument. The first movement is very lyrical. The second is played with only the harp and very nearly a duet. The third movement rocks. The solo bass part is probably best played using a modified "solo" tuning: i.e. leaving the bottom string at E, the other three up a full step. --Charlie Barnett |
