| Marketing Copy | The Percussion Concerto was completed in Seattle in June, 2007. It was written for the extraordinary talents of Lisa Pegher and commissioned by a Consortium of seven orchestras. The work is in three movements, with the 2nd and 3rd connected without pause. In the outer movements, the soloist plays a large battery of non-pitched instruments; the second features only the marimba. There are several cadenzas, and opportunities for the soloist to improvise along with the orchestra, always in very structured ways. (2007) ca. 18' |

| Program Notes | The Percussion Concerto was completed in Seattle in June, 2007. It was written for the extraordinary talents of Lisa Pegher , and commissioned by a Consortium of seven orchestras: The Southwest Michigan Symphony, the McKeesport Symphony, the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony, the Asheville Symphony, the Louisiana Philharmonic, the Northeast Pennsylvania Philharmonic and the Williamsport Symphony. The work is in three movements, with the 2nd and 3rd connected without pause. In the outer movements, the soloist plays a large battery of non-pitched instruments; the second features only the marimba. The greatest challenge in writing the Concerto was to create recognizable melodic shapes without the use of actual pitches; I hope I have succeeded! There are several cadenzas, and opportunities for the soloist to improvise along with the orchestra, always in very structured ways. I love writing for percussion, as rhythm is almost always the most important aspect of my music. This is especially apparent in the frequent jazz influences which seem to reoccur throughout so much of my work. |
