Program NotesIn the spring of 1984, the clarinetist, Giora Feidman, asked me to write a short work to open the first meeting of the International Network of Children of Jewish Holocaust Survivors. The work was to be played at Carnegie Hall, without applause, to the memory of those who did not survive. I wrote Elegy in early March and Giora Feidman premiered it on 28 March 1984 at the planned occasion. --Robert Starer

Review"Robert Starer's Elegy...proved both haunted and haunting. It opened with hushed epigrammatic phrases for clarinet, as if the composer were afraid to breathe a full melody. Gradually the intensity increased until the sound became an excruciating siren scream from which there was no escape. Mr. Starer has written a powerful work, one not unworthy of its immense and terrible subject." --The New York Times
