Program NotesAlthough I am of Ashkenazi descent, I have loved Sephardic music for a very long time. The second movement of my Third Symphony is based on this haunting musical culture. Thus, when Cuarteto Latinoamericano commissioned me to write a short Sephardic piece for them, I leapt at the chance. About half the piece is adapted directly from the orchestra version down to four strings; the rest includes melodies I didn't set in the earlier work. Among the songs I have included are: "Adio Querido", "Cuando el Rey Nimrod", and "La Prima Vez". These are all found in various versions throughout the Sephardic Diaspora, from Greece and Trukey to Israel and beyond; sad, loving remnants of the Golden Age before the fateful year 1492.
