| Program Notes | Duo in Three Movements for violin and piano (1981-84) is a large-scale, highly virtuosic work about 18-20 minutes long. It was first performed by violinist Kurt Nikkanen with the composer at the piano in a contemporary music concert at NYU and has since received many performances throughout the United States and Russia by Rolf Schulte, Anna Rabinova (now a member of the NY Phhilharmonic), and several other violinists. It was recorded on an LP on Opus One by Gregory Fulkerson. The first movement alternates fast and slow sections; the second movement, Intermezzo, is a short, slow movement between the two big outer movements, something like the sorbet restaurants sometimes serve between two large main courses as a palate cleanser; and the finale is a very strict set of variations. |
