Dedication(not set)
Program NotesArray was commissioned by the Kronos Quartet and completed in December, 1987. The ensemble took the piece on tour during its 1988-89 season, with stops at several U.S. cities, including a Los Angeles performance in January, 1989. Cast in a single movement of five clearly defined sections, its title refers to the fanning-out of material which occurs several times during the course of the piece. In the first large section, for example, the first violin takes the lead in an accompanied solo of restricted range - barely a fifth - and relatively long note values which gradually become a bit shorter. The rapid basic pulse is, however, barely submerged. Then, the viola takes over in a solo of noticeably shorter note values and larger range - about a twelfth. This process continues through the second violin's increasingly frenetic solo and into the cello's, which spans more than three and a half octaves. The second section then presents a high, gentle solo by the first violin, and the cadential chord now spans five octaves. The third and fifth sections of the piece show two additional ways of arraying the material. The fifth part is also a melodic return to the first, with a quite different harmony. In the fourth section, by contrast, an expressive melody is passed around the group in a rather luxuriant texture and flexible rhythmic unison. --Donald Crockett

Review"Crockett's Array received its premiere amid the fire sculpture: metal hoses, stands of light and spotlights throwing shadows of the perfromers on rear screens. Array is an appealing work, gentle in harmony and jazzy in rhythm. The melodies have a folksy quality, revolving as they do around a central tone. There were serene moments: a choralelike hymn with the quartet moving in fluent unison, and animated moments when each player takes separate parts in lively conversation. It bounced along pleasantly and thoughtfully." --Timoth Mangan, Los Angeles Herald Examiner
