Program NotesSea Findings (1999) for contrabass and orchestra was commissioned by the Broeker Fund for New Music for contrabassist P. Kellach Waddle. The work is cast in a single, unbroken movement. The work was inspired by a quote from a poem by American poet e.e. cummings (1894-1962) which prefaces the score. In keeping with that inspiration, the work is rather introspective in tone. Much of the musical material is generated from the melody which opens the work, originally presented by the English horn. The outer sections present the tune in a more straightforward fashion whereas the middle section of the work is based on transformations of that tune. --Carson Cooman
