| Program Notes | Entire ADIEU concluding Rimbaud's "Saison en enfer" verbatim, in original French. Hair-raising and heart-rending text, unparalelled in literature. Probably only attempt at setting entire text. I end harrowing work with setting of R's magical "L'ETERNITE", this as coda and consolation. On occasion of centenary of R's death, the Champs-Elysees were lined up and down with banners inscribed with lines from this poem, known to all who know French language. Rimbaud, national treasure and icon, ignored while alive. "CARNET" is verbatim setting of entire harrowing "ADIEU" from 'SAISON EN ENFER" - his explosive, tormented psycho-autobiography. More than a farewell, this adieu is young poet's heart-rending renunciation of poetry - this at 19, after achieving revolution in French and international letters. Also an attempt to chart a way out of the deprivation, pain suffered in its service. ["Il faut etre absolument moderne".] A course which was to take him to Ethiopia in ultimately futile search for fortune, ending in amputation and early death. And with his death, the Rimbaud Myth is born. The troubling document is followed with reverb-laced setting of R's magical, ethereal vision of eternity, quoted above. |
