| Marketing Copy | This trio was created for the Mansfield Symphony Woodwind Trio to play at children’s concerts. It tells the story of how during the American Revolution and Civil War young boys shouldered a rifle and marched off to war and how sad it was to see them go. This is expressed thru the song “Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier”, sometimes called “Buttermilk Hill.” This musical story has a happy ending however when joy is expressed by playing “When Johnny Comes Marching Home.” Both songs are based on old Irish tunes. The original arrangement was scored for 2 Bb clarinets and bass clarinet, but it works equally well for bassoon. |
