Program NotesPolarities was commissioned by the Indiana University Symphonic Wind Ensemble. Frederick Fox, chairman of the Indiana University Composition Department, completed the work during the fall of 1987. It was decided that the premiere of Polarities would be at this MENC convention performance.

This one movement work is basically divided into two sections, adagio and allegro moderato. The work is primarily based on the interval of a minor third which is heard in the first entrance of the clarinets and the vibraphone. As the composition develops, the texture becomes increasingly more colorful and active. Rhythmically, the work ranges from a rather easy flow in the slow section to quick and crisply articulated passages by the entire ensemble, building to an exciting climax.
