| Program Notes | Available Light was commissioned by the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble for its 20th Anniversary season with a grant from the Howard Heinz Endowment, and conducted by the composer in its premiere performance, September, 1996. "The work is like a chamber symphony in three movements, with a slow middle movement and a rondo finale. The first movement is based on the alteration of several tempi and textures. After having the privilege of working with these wonderful musicians for so many years, I wanted to write music which would feature not only their virtuosity, but their expressive qualities as well. The title comes from a beautiful book of poems by Marge Piercy, which I found expressive of the many shades of light and dark that shaped the piece." Available Light is dedicated to Janet Sarbaugh of the Heinz Endowments, and to all the musicians of PNME, past and present. |
