| Program Notes | Extraction on No. 8 was written on commission from the Albuquerque Youth Symphony. The only 'restriction' on the new piece was "the piccolos are very weak this year, go easy on the piccolos." This was the prime directive that inspired the entire piece! Just a year earlier my son, Paddy, had been involved in a major accident at a high school basketball game - as he went up for a slam-dunk, he was smashed from behind and went crashing to the hardwood floor, face-first, losing his two front teeth, resulting in years of expensive reconstructive surgery. In orthodontic lingo, "No. 8" is one of the front teeth. Trying to make light of a rotten situation, it hit me that this would be a bizarre and unusual event to depict in music. About 1 minute into the piece, the piccolos begin playing their highest note possible, as loud as possible (imitating that annoying and terrifying 'whirl' of the dentist's drill!) and continue throughout the rest of the piece. This "dentist drill" sound compliments a relentless, nervous-wreck orchestra that drives headlong to the "smashing" finale!! |
