Title NameSerenade (Spitzweg) in G, Op. 25
Marketing CopyThis SERENADE, Op. 25 for two violins and viola by Austrian composer Ernst Toch (1887-1964) is also sometimes called "Spitzweg," inspired by the German artist Carl Spitzweg (1808-1885), whose paintings Toch found while rummaging through art stores in Innsbruck while he took a brief rest from the North-Italian trenches to which he was assigned during World War I. He wrote the work upon his return to the whistling bullets, but the sensuous beauty of the string sound and the expansive melodies conveys the idyllic and peaceful atmosphere of Spitzweg's paintings rather than the calamity around the composer.
