| Program Notes | The inscription on the score to American Guernica reads, -for Carol, Addie Mae, Cynthia and Denise, four little girls (ages 14, 14, 14, and 11) killed by a bomb explosion at the 16th Street Baptist Church, Birmingham AL, 15 September 1963.+ More than 8,000 mourners, including 800 clergymen attended the funeral service. The surge of emotional momentum generated by this barbaric act served to ensure the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. American Guernica presents the gamut of emotions surrounding the event. It is hard to distinguish whether the opening section of the work serves to reflect the chaos of the bombing, or the shocking brutality of such an act of humanity. Amidst the chaos are interspersed musical fragments of Jesus Loves Me, and moments of reflection brought on by gospel-style piano. The work poignantly concludes with four glissandi played on the strings of the piano. (author unknown; appeared in Grand Symphonic Winds program, 4/18/99). |
