Program Notes
The Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra received its premiere in 1957 with Howard Hanson conducting the Eastman Philharmonia. The soloist was Porter Poindexter. The brief introduction of the first movement recurs several times in the course of the movement. This device, a ritornello, is used in alternation with lyrical and dance-like sections. The second movement is monothematic. The playful character of the third movement, a rondo, is sustained even in a fugato section that has a virtuosic outburst of counterpoint for the solo trombone. The Trombone Concerto was recorded for CBS in 1974 with the London Symphony Orchestra and trombonist, Denis Wick.
