Melange was written in the spring of 1987 for Stafford Horne, to whom the work is dedicated and who gave the first performance in New York City in May 1987. The title of the piece does not refer to any stylistic or technical procedures used, but instead reflects the various conscious musical influences, primarily Bach, Coltrane and Roberto Gerhard, which were in my mind during the work's composition. None of these composers' styles are obviously apparent in Melange, however; the work is perhaps best regarded as an attempt to capture the wonderful and unique characteristics of the soprano saxophone in my own idiom. --Jeffrey Miller
