Dedication
Program Notes
Lunar Halos (Paraselenae) was completed in August 1990 and was written specifically for double bassist James VanDemark and ProMusica. The relationship between the solo instrument and the orchestra is more collaborative in nature than confrontational as is suggested by the traditional concerto format. The title suggests both the manner in which some of the musical textures evolve and the coloristic aspects of the orchestration; it is an image to be regarded as a generating idea rather than as a programmatic key. Lunar Halos begins with the double bass alone. The orchestra then reflects and builds on the pitch material introduced, and states the generating chord of the work, built on the notes of an F-sharp melodic minor scale (f#, g#, a, b, c#, d#, e#) with an added g in the bass. A more animated section in the winds (Brightly, with precision) is followed by a dialogue between the solo and various woodwind pairs. From another orchestral section (With intensity) the solo emerges to initiate 'chamber music' with the solo players of the string sections. This leads to a restatement of the generation chord in an orchestral tutti (Dramatically) which 'resolves' this harmony to a second chord built on F#, signaled by an upward sweep in the harp. Following a quiet section with the solo instrument, the music builds to a climax and a final chord, built on E, which is again announced by the harp. The woodwind material heard earlier is restated with anxious counterpoint in the string (Bright and precise, triumphant). The music becomes quieter, reintroducing the solo double bass, and moves to a whispering close [With mystery (in shadow)]."
