When Icelandic conductor Gudmundur Emilsson asked me to compose a string orchestra work on Icelandic/Nordic themes for a tour he was organizing to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of the Viking landings in America, I decided I need look no further for inspiration than Iceland+s descriptive nickname: "Land of Fire and Ice."  What more than these two powerful natural phenomena could a composer require; indeed what more would and audience need?  Well, maybe it helps to know that the source of the "Fire" is the volcanic and geothermal activity that rumbles beneath the surface of the island; and the "Ice" refers at least in part to the slow-moving, powerful glaciers that, along with the volcanic and other geothermal activity, have shaped and altered the landscape and culture of Iceland.

Musically, the work is like and overture with a fairly conventional Fast/Slow/Fast tempo scheme and an ABA thematic structure, in other words, Fire/Ice/Fire.  I've also made considerable use of solo passages for the first chair players in a sort of a concerto grosso style.  Sometimes their musical ideas are clearly set off from the main body of the orchestra and sometimes they're simply another voice in the texture, barley distinguishable from the rest of the orchestral lines.
