Program Notes
From Darkness Shines was commissioned by DePauw University as part of the centennial celebration of the School of Music. Since 1884, the Music School has been like a beacon, a source of enlightenment to the students and the community. It is this "enlightenment" that I have represented in the score. The opening section portrays Darkness, as in a lack of understanding. Featured here are wide-ranging dynamics highlighted by thunderous timpani rolls and crashing sonorities. Darkness is followed by Struggle, representative of the hundredyears of growth. Here the tempo picks up briskly and is marked by disjunct melodic lines in the upper woodwinds and strings, puntuated by muted brass and percussion. Near the middle a solo trumpet is heard above the low reeds. The section concludes with a wild climax pitting families of instruments against each other. A quiet, reflective Triumph follows featuring a warm melody first given to the French horn. Joy is expressed in a dance-like movement, with a festive and upbeat tone. Near the middle a Latin American influence is prevalant. The section leads to a triumphant close, which recalls earlier melodies. --David Ott
