Program Notes
A trepak is a spirited Russian or Cossack dance in duple time. One of the most famous trepaks is heard in Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker. American Trepak is a short, dance-like composition for orchestra. Like the Russian trepak or the Baroque contredanse, American Trepak begins with a spirited duple rhythm and simple melody. This simple tune progresses through a variety of textures, eventually slowing down into a moment of elongated (and very deeply pitched) resonance. From here, the tune breaks for the surface, as it were, releasing into a syncopated and bright variation of the opening moments, and eventually to a fully textured reprise of the beginning. --Fred Cohen
