"Bachangù" (1984) was conceived by Ricardo Lorenz as a short Afro-Caribbean statement. The name itself literally derives from three other music-related terms of the region: Batç, Charanga, and Guaguancù. The work makes use of these three Afro-Caribbean elements in a kaleidoscopic fashion employing the Charanga's lightness and lyrical character, the rhythmic sophistication of the Guaguancù, and the Batç drums mysticism. "Bachangù" was first performed by the composer at Indiana University Recital Hall. The score was revised shortly thereafter and has been performed since then by seven different soloists throughout Europe, North and South America.
