Fantasy Etudes were composed for Margery Connor (pianist) and her 13-year-old daughter, Pamela Connor (violinist). The intent was to provide a suite of short pieces which could be enjoyed be performers of all ages. The five movements have been given programmatic titles: "Countdown" (a short introductory piece in strict time, repeating pitches as if counting the beats); "Lyric" (a melody introduced in the violin, taken up by the piano, returning freely in the violin at the end); "Rough Rhythms" (in changing meters); "Romance" (a waltz, melody-with-accompaniment) and "Strolling on Frederick Street" (jaunty walking-music composed while the composer was living on Frederick Street in San Francisco). Fantasy Etudes were premiered on May 12, 1992, in Syracuse, New York.
