Program Notes
The Melting Voice is an arrangement for large chamber ensemble of the third movement of my 1986 orchestral work, Melting Voices. All three movements of the orchestral work take poetic fragments as points of departure, and "The Melting Voice" comes from John Milton: "The melting voice through mazes running, untwisting all chains that tie the hidden soul of harmony." This I couldn't resist. The Melting Voice was part of a large collection of short pieces made by local composers for the New Music LA Festival in 1987. The Thornton Contemporary Music Ensemble presented the world premiere of the entire set of pieces for this Festival at Japan America Thatre to somewhat puzzled yet quite positive critical response.
