TWO WELSH FOLK SONGS was written in 1984 for The Braden Junior High School 7th Grade Wood-Wind Quintet of the Buckeye Local Schools in Ashtabula, Ohio."All Through The Night", known as "Ar Hyd Y Nos" in Wales and as "Poor Mary Ann" in England and "The Ash Grove", known as "Llwyn Onn"in Wales are two of the best known melodies of the folk tradition of Wales. "The Ash Grove" was also used by John Gay in his Beggar's Opera in 1728. Both originated as instrumental pieces for the Welsh harp and as such are built around the tonic, sub-dominant, and dominant. Both folk melodies have been set to several hymn texts.
