Program Notes
Night Rubrics (1990), phantasy for solo cello, was commissioned by American cellist Angela Schwartz. The somewhat enigmatic title seeks to invoke that atmosphere of fleeting thoughts, both vivid and vague, that run through the mind late at night when one is on the edge of sleep. In this state the slightest noise can set off a chain of unexpected emotions and ideas, governed by their own strange logic which mixes both conscious and unconscious fears and desires. In musical terms, these independent lines of thought are expressed by sharply differentiated thematic layers that interrupt and impinge upon each other. --Stephen Hartke
