Commissioned by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra to feature the string trio, Time for Three, as soloists with orchestra, and premiered by same on May 31, 2013 under the direction of Krystof Urbanski in Indianapolis, Indiana. This is a unique work with elements of improvisation for both soloists and orchestra that celebrates the improvisatory theater techniques espoused by the Second City troupe of Chicago. The composer writes: "The title derives from the sources for this piece: the Viola Spolin tradition exemplified in her classic book, 'Improvisation for the Theatre' - from which derived her son Paul Sills’ Second City troupe in Chicago starting in the 1950’s (Paul directed the two actors’ operas I wrote with Arnold Weinstein); and the work of longtime friend and co-student of Darius Milhaud, Andre Hajdu, whose disciplined and joyous approach to musical improvisation has resulted in two landmark works, each in several volumes - 'The Milky Way' and 'The Book of Challenges' - exploring the creative tension between limits and freedom in improvisation. This piece attempts a fusion of their principles."
