Program Notes
The first part of the piece sets the mood for the quiet beauty of the woodlands, which in turn sets the stage for the gripping encounter which is to take place. The Tortoise is personified by the contrabassoon, the Hare by the clarinet. Although the outcome of the race might seem ridiculously predictable (if you haven+t ever heard of Aesop), the Hare, who should be a shoo-in, goofs off-and here you+ll hear a little quote from Brahms. His friends the birds try to get him out of the jam (with a little quote from Schubert), but-oh, you+ll just have to hold onto your chairs until you find out what really happens! Whatever the outcome, you may be sure the Hare doesn+t worry his pretty ears about it. The score calls for solo clarinet, solo contrabassoon, piccolo, two flutes, two oboes, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, two trombones, celeste, harp, strings, timpani, snare drum, bass drum, small triangle, cymbals, and one gun shot, although some of these instruments play only very sporadically and they must go bananas waiting for their next entrance. It is perfectly acceptable to laugh at certain points during this piece. (from files, origin and date unknown)
