Canciones de Jara was composed following a request from violist Roberto Díaz and an
invitation by Leon Gregorian to composed a work to be especially premiere by the Michigan
State University Symphony Orchestra. My collaboration with Díaz towards the
composition and premiere of the work was possible through a Michigan State University
Intramural Grant (IRGP) from the Vice President’s Office for Research and through the
generosity of the Michigan State University College of Music, James Forger, Dean.
Heartfelt appreciation to my colleagues at MSU who supported the creation and premiere
of this work, especially James Forger, Dean of the College of Music; Leon Gregorian,
Director of Orchestras; Raphael Jiménez, Associate Director of Orchestras; Cindy
Taggard, Music Education Area Chair; Tom Childs and Victor Márquez, Graduate
Assistant in Music Composition.
Special thanks to the MacDowell Colony and to my family, Petra, Lucas, and Niklas for
