Time Traveler has three main sections or movements, characterized by steady but different tempos: Moderato, Very Fast and Very Rhythmic (Moderately Fast). Preceding each of these movements are rubato passages, including two extensive cello soliloquies, which serve to link the movements together so that the entire piece is performed without pause. The title is really shorthand, for the composition is also very much about travels through space (distance) as well as through different stylistic or cultural universes. The specified arrangement of the percussion instruments is designed to permit exploration of stereophonic and antiphonal effects. Throughout Time Traveler there is an uneven drift by members of the ensemble as they travel from a "serious" music style toward one influenced more by "popular" music. The percussion section begins the drift first. By the second movement the pianist (playing synthesizer) has joined the percussion, leaving only the cellist holding fast to a purist's version of "serious" music. After the soliloquy which segues into the finale, the cellist too, slips into a "jazzier" style. I use words such as "jazzier" and "serious" in quotes because at no time is the music truly jazz in a traditional sense, but at the same time sensitive listeners may be able to hear subtle jazz or popular music influences in many passages that are more heavily influence by Western art music traditions.
