The THREE ROMANCES (DREI ROMANZEN) for Oboe and Piano, Op. 94 is Robert Schumann's (1810-1856) only work written for the oboe, and it is considered amongst the best works written for the instrument still. Composed during one of the most productive years of Schumann's career, the work was not written for any particular player or for a commission, but it was rather given to his wife Clara as a Christmas present. While a private performance took place on November 2, 1850, with Clara Schumann at the piano and Francois Schubert playing violin, the first public performance, performed on oboe as intended, did not occur until January 24, 1863, featuring Emilius Lund playing oboe with Carl Reinecke at the piano. Schumann only ever conceived of the three-movement work as a vehicle for the oboe, but against his wishes, versions for violin and clarinet in A were also offered by the original publisher. This edition, edited and fingered by Henry Schradieck, does retain the option of violin or clarinet. Reprint edition.
