A boisterous celebration of life on a family-owned dairy farm, this fanfare featuring a percussion section of farm implements. Beginning with the brass heralding the arrival of morning, the strings and wind soon answer to energize the start of the day until, finally, the percussion enters, playing milk cans, pails and a cowbell. The climax arrives at the "milking section" in which the conductor leads the orchestra (milking sounds) in downward milking gestures, which is follwed by a percussion cadenza and a final restatement of the 'energizing' theme.

Program Notes
This short work is a boisterous fanfare featuring a percussion section of farm implements: milk can, pails, and cowbells. It is an interesting composition for young people and their parents, celebrating life on a family-owned dairy farm. The composer, who resides on the Brainstorm Dairy Farm at Braintree, Vermont, has written this as an expression of the joy and humor she finds in living on such a farm. The piece begins with the brass instruments heralding the arrival of morning. The strings and winds answer with ascending patterns to energize the start of the day, followed by the percussion playing the milk can, pails, and cowbell. The climax of the work arrives at the "Milking Motive," in which the conductor leads the orchestra with downward milking gestures. This is followed by a percussion cadenza and a final restatement of the energizing theme. -Dr. Raymond Foote (appeared in Carson City Symphony program,2/28/99)

Review
"Fanfare for the Family Farm is a perfect piece for young people and their parents. The music is beautifully written, delightful for the audience and truly educational because it is fun as well as artistic--just as "Till Eulenspiegal" and Haydn's" Farewell Symphony."
I had the pleasure of conducting the Canadian premiere with the Toronto Symphony, and the piece was a great success. Having conducted Young People's Concerts for the past 25 years all over the world, I would give this work my most enthusiastic recommendation.
--David Amram, Composer/Conductor

"We enjoyed doing your Fanfare for the Family Farm on the Young People's Concerts with the Toledo Symphony . . . We even persuaded the percussionists to wear caps and flannel shirts while they banged on your milk cans."
--Emily Freeman-Brown, Guest Conductor The Toledo Symphony Orchestra.
