J.S. Bach wrote this concerto between 1717 and 1723 in Cötchen where he was in the employ of Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cötchen. The original manuscript is lost, and the earliest source of this work is a manuscript by a copyist from 1760, ten years after Bach’s death. While Bach was primarily a harpsichordist and organist, he also played violin and viola. In fact, he had led Prince Leopold’s orchestra from the viola stand. His superb writing for the violin shows that he was familiar with Vivaldi’s works, and while the E Major Concerto has much in common with the concerto grosso form of the period, the character of this work is unabashedly a violin concerto for a brilliant soloist. This publication presents the world’s premier performance edition of this concerto, with practical fingerings and bowings by acclaimed Heifetz protégé, Endre Granat.
