Program Notes
The Cantares Argentinos were commissioned in 1992 by the Los Angeles Master Chorale under the direction of Roger Wagner. The world premiere took place at the Los Angeles Music Center, and then Roger Wagner took his chorus on tour all over Europe, including England, France, Germany, Italy, and the former USSR. The Coplas de Carnaval, which is the last movement, has been orchestrated for symphony orchestra and chorus by me, and I performed it as an overture to the opening ceremony of the Pan-American Games in Mar del Plata, Argentina. On that occasion, two orchestras participated together: The National Symphony Orchestra of Argentina, and the Symphony Orchestra of Mar del Plata in conjunction with the Coro Polifonico. Roger Wagner kept performing the piece in its original version (mixed chorus and chamber orchestra) all over the United States and he repeated performances at the Los Angeles Music Center. It was widely received by the audiences. --Lalo Schifrin
