My Second String Quartet, Capriccio, is, as the subtitle implies, a whimsical, light-hearted romp. The work evolved out of a much earlier, long abandoned and undeveloped piece that shared the same premise as the current composition. At times nostalgic and wistful, at times decidedly tongue-in-cheek, the piece is a series of variations on an EXTREMELY well-known theme...so well-known, in fact, that it is never cited. Some of the movements are "original," some are allusions to or transcriptions of extant variations on the same melody, while others are more speculative in nature and pose the following question: "If certain twentieth- (and twenty-first-) century composers had also been inspired to write variations on this theme, what might the results have been"?
