Program Notes
Raise the Roof! was commissioned in 1987 by the Chandler Cultural Foundation, Randolph, Vermont, to celebrate the restoration of Chandler Hall, a community concert hall and theater. Much local pride and effort was given to providing the Randolph residents with this performance space. The spirit was that of American "Barn Raisings." Thus, Raise the Roof! was inspired by the energy of the community renovation activity. The hand and foot tappings are derived from the rhythms of hammers pounding and carpenters at work. Review
"You should know that Raise the Roof! is one of our favorite pieces and it is always received with enthusiasm, whether by adults or kids." --Larry J. Zimmerman, Chestnut Brass Company

"The most important reason that inescapably comes to mind is that we must SHARE her music. Gwyneth's music speaks to everyone somehow, some way... whether through her humor, sense of retrospection or tenderness, sheer joy, or seriousness. Sometimes there's a more obvious mission, such as literal story-telling, where she includes a narrator. Gwyneth allows the story to come alive right before us so that there's a sense of immediacy in its creation and we become a part of it. Other times, such as in her Raise the Roof, the spirit gathered in the room is collectively effusive, alive, warm and soulful in its joy. In her Braintree Quintet, where at one moment there is laughter in the audience as the oboist and bassoonist simulate sounds of bleating sheep, and at another there is the undeniable sense that the audience has unified; an unforeseen group meditation experience. I am not only moved by that specific movement, but I feel that the audience is at once with me and yet far away into themselves. How could I not want to share all of that?
--Carole Lemire, EQUINOX CHAMBER PLAYERS
