Rapscallion is not a psychotic fusion of rap music and tiny onions. Although the piece does have its moments of pulsing, rhyming rhythms and 'teary-eyed' introspection. Rapscallion is actually more a search for that child still alive in each of us. The earlier 'working title' ("Child in the Loft") referred to a specific personal recurring dream image...one in which there was always clear evidence of the recent presence of a young child in a cramped loft. Rapscallion soon evolved beyond mere 'personal dream journeys' and developed into a more abstract release of that inner-child...a mini-journey of tracking (and embracing) that elusive little rascal through his energetic rapscallionism, tenderness and innocense of being. Back on the personal side, Rapscallion has helped me to appreciate my own rambunctious 5 year-old son, Paddy. His name has also provided one of the two primary reasons for ending the work in atrance-fusion...with a dream-like (yet distorted) traditional Irish folk tune. --Michael Schelle, October, 1990
