Program Notes
In August 1993, in the beautiful Mexican colonial town of San Miguel Allende, I wrote FANFARRIA for the 100th anniversary of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra [founded in 1895]. The following summer, in Breckinridge, Colorado [Rocky Mountain sky-and-ski country], I decided to write more movements to go with it. This project came to fruition in the summer of 1996, as part of my Seattle Symphony Composer-in-Residence appointment. In Breckenridge once more, the score was finished during July 1996, and dedicated to Gerard Schwarz. Since the music was written at altitudes of 7,000-9,000 feet, the title seemed quite appropriate. The second movement, ALPINE MEADOWS, is for strings and percussion alone. The third, MOUNTAIN RAILROAD, utilizes only woodwinds and strings. The finale, AT THE SUMMIT, brings back the full orchestra of FANFARRIA. The parts were extracted with the help of the Margaret Fairbanks Jury Fund of the Amercian Music Center. --David Stock
