Program Notes
Justin Morgan was an American landowner, horse breeder, and composer who wrote a brief choral piece called "Amanda" in the 1790's. This piece is often referred to in histories of American music because of some unusual harmonies it contains, such as the second chord with its G-natural and G-sharp sounding simultaneously. The effect is not naòve, I think, but poignant. It was this poignancy that attracted me to Morgan's piece and inspired me to use it within a piece of my own. The function of the ensemble on stage is to set up an expectation for "Amanda", but never to reveal it completely. When we finally do hear "Amanda" in its entirety, it is heard through the ensemble's continued playing, as though we are listening through a veil of time and distance, and perhapes also a veil of memory. --Allyson Brown Applebaum
