The title of Anne LeBaron's Telluris Theoria Sacra is derived from Thomas Burnet's Sacred Theory of the Earth (1689). The frontispiece of Burnet's treatise suggested the organization for this piece. Both linear and cyclical progressions of time on earth are depicted in the frontispiece illustration: an eternal divine presence straddles a circular arrangement of seven globes showing the earth's cycle of genesis and dissolution. The first globe represents the original chaotic earth coalescing into the earth of Eden's paradise--a smooth, featureless, second globe. A flood then consumes earth (3rd globe). When the waters recede, the cracked crust of our current earth remains (4th globe). The earth is next consumed by fire (5th globe) and then becomes smooth again (6th globe) as falling ashes create spherical perfection. Finally, no longer needed for human habitation, earth becomes a brilliant star (7th globe). Seven musical "forms" are incorporated into the four movements of the piece, each corresponding to the seven globes of Burnet's illustration.
