Review
Stock writes that the sixth quartet was written under the spell of Bartók, and the influences are clearly apparent without sounding overly derivative. There are structural parallels, with six movements played nearly without pause, and the close counterpoint is reminiscent of the Hungarian master. The octave passages in quick succession in the first and last movements lend the quartet a pleasing symmetry. Stock has clearly assimilated many of the most important developments of 20th-century quartet writing while maintaining his own personal and communicative style. This article originally appeared in Issue 34:1 (Sept/Oct 2010) of Fanfare Magazine.
