PORTRAITS was composed in 1991 for American soprano Barbara Ford. Originally written for voice and piano, it was orchestrated for voice and chamber ensemble in 1993, and will receive several performances in this latter version in the United States in January and February of 1994. I spent a good deal of time choosing the texts. The wealth of poetry being written in Western Australia is considerable. Discovering its depth and profundity was a rewarding experience--difficulty arising only when it became necessary to pick those poems with which I wanted to live. And basically, the choice was based upon just that premise: poetry, like music, is something with which to live. I did not know any of the three poets..but I'd like to. For the common feature of the the choice of texts is, for me, the qualities of human spirit which emerge--three visions (or, if you will, 'portraits') of aspects of the human condition. --Edward Applebaum
